Affiliate programs, such as sharing a site actually attract more sales for retailers?

My boss is signed with them and the places I saw the promotion of its products are butt ugly. I do not spend enough time on the site, click a flag if it looks like a child 12 years ago. I do not think things work and drop their money, but it seems to do Hell Bent.
